Brian Alldis

Career summary

  • Before athletics Brian was part of Bury Bombers basketball team - and was once National junior champion in that sport.
  • He was inspired to take up wheelchair racing when he met Dame Tanni Grey Thompson.
  • Outside of training he works as an information assistant for his local council. Brian has a celtic dragon tattoo on his right arm, and one of the people he most admires in life is Lance Armstrong because of the challenges he's faced in his career.
Hollie Arnold
  • Hollie is from Holton-le-Clay near Grimsby
  • Hollie first competed in DSE Junior championships in 2006, where she broke many national records in the javelin. Since then, her career has improved rapidly, enough to secure her a place in the Beijing Paralympic Games.
  • At just fourteen years old, Hollie represented her country, where she came 11th in the Javelin Final.
  • Before Beijing she was ranked third in the world for her category F46 and is currently the F46 Junior champion in Discus, Shot and Javelin.
  • Hollie won the Yorkshire Nationwide DSE Regional Sports Person Award 2008.
Rosie Bancroft
  • Selected for British Disability Swimming World Class Talent Programme 2007-2009
  • Named 2007 South East Regional Sportsperson of the year at Nationwide Disability Sports Awards
  • Won 7 gold medals in the S10 category at the DSE National Junior Championships 2009

Chloe Bucks

Ben Clansey
  • Ben has been swimming for about 7 years

  • From 2005 to 2008 he won many medals in his class. In 2009 DSE Juniors he took home seven gold medals
Hannah Cockcroft
  • At 11 years old Hannah joined the school disport team. She was entered into the regional plus national DSE championships in seated discus. She also joined the Cardinals wheelchair basketball team and competed nationally.
  • After meeting Dr Ian Thompson at talent day, she was introduced to wheelchair racing at 15 years old.
  • She competes in Wheelchair racing mainly but continues to compete in basketball
  • Hannah has an undiagnosed condition involving the nerves in the spinal cord. She competes as a T54 wheelchair racer, DSE profile 11.
  • Her favourite events are 200m/400m/800m wheelchair races and 10k road races

Josef Isaac Craig
  • Josef is now 12 years old, date of birth being 17/02/1997.
  • Josef achieved 3 gold and 3 silver medals at the Junior Short Course Championships in Sheffield in March 2009. He has also been accepted onto the World Class Programme with British Swimming.
  • He trains with South Tyneside Swim team and with Gateshead Kestrels; both clubs are working with British Swimming on his long term training schedule.
  • He dreams of competing at paralympic level and continues to train hard and is very dedicated to his sport.
Ryan Crouch
  • Born in 1994, Ryan is from Northford

Charlotte Ford
  • Charlotte has swam with the City of Carlisle swimming club since 2008 and the northwest swimming club since February 2009

  • At the national junior disability championships 2009, she won a silver medal in the 400m medley team and a gold medal in 50m backstroke
  • Charlotte was spotted as having potential at a Paralympic talent day and she hopes she will make it to 2012 to represent her country
Heather Frederiksen
  • Heather from Leigh broke four world and six European records - as well as an extra two World and European as part of the North West relay team - at the DSE National Short Course Championships in Sheffield, November 2008.
  • Heather trains with the City of Salford club and her coach is John Stout
  • She swims for the S8, SB7 and SM8 class
  • She won gold in the 100m Backstroke, two silvers in the 100m and 400m freestyle and a bronze in the 200m Individual Medley in Beijing
  • Although Heather is fairly new to disability swimming, she has amazed swimmers and officials alike with her talent

Holly Girven
  • Holly started swimming competitively 2 years ago. She trains with City of Lincoln Pentaqua for the East Midlands team.
  • Holly has brittle bone disease and swims in S8 SB7 and SM8
  • Her favourite strokes are freestyle and backstroke
  • Recently she achieved a bronze medal in 50m breaststroke and silver medal in 50m freestyle at the DSE National Junior championships in Sheffield.
Alexander Goodman
  • He lives in Winchester and trains with the Royal Navy and Eastleigh SC

Kate Grey
  • Kate lives in Bristol and swims for Team Bath

  • She won silver in the IPC World Championships 2006 as part of the 4 x 100m Medley Relay

Stefan Hoggan
  • Stefan has been swimming for thirteen years but only in competitions for the last eight or nine. He swims as part of the Scottish team.
  • He swims in the S9/SB8. He is a below elbow amputee on his right arm.

  • His best achievement so far is getting a gold medal in the 100m butterfly in the 2008 UK School Games

Liz Johnson

Nyree Lewis
  • Nyree is one half of the swimming golden couple- alongside Sascha Kindred
  • She lives in Hereford, but is originally from Wales
  • Trained by Emma Patrick, she swims in the S6, SB5 and SM6 class
  • She has competed in three Paralympic Games since Sydney 2000, winning a total of two gold, four silver and three bronze medals overall.
  • Nyree holds world records in the 50m, 100m and 200m Backstroke, 800m Freestyle and 100m Breaststroke.
Chris Martin
  • Chris lives in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
  • The Discus thrower Chris Martin won the Nationwide DSE East Midlands regional sports person award in 2008.
  • Chris set a new world record at DSE’s British Open in Manchester back in June 2008. The 36-year-old from Mansfield threw 28.91m to beat the previous best of 28.73 in the F33 category.
  • Martin claimed gold in at the Paralympic World Cup 2008 and appeared in his fourth Games appearance in Beijing and took a silver medal in the F33 Discus

Ben McGifford
  • Ben has been competing seriously for a year but involved in different sports for three years
  • Ben is a wheelchair racer

  • He knocked 8 minutes off of his London Wheelchair Mini Marathon time and aims to improve in all of his preferred distances

Andrew Mullen
  • 12 years old and part of the Scottish squad
  • Andrew has been swimming for 5 years and competing for only 18 months with the national squad
  • Andrew swims in S5 SB4 SM5 classes. His disability consists of missing forearms on both sides and has a shorter left leg. He can not walk and uses a powered wheelchair.
  • He specialises in Backstroke and butterfly.
  • His top achievements so far are winning 7 golds out of 7 events at the DSE Juniors this year. Andrew hopes to swim with the GB Team one day.
Ben Page
  • Ben began learning to swim at one year old. He began swimming competitively in 2003, firstly for the Sussex Squids and Eastbourne Swimming Club and now Reading Cygnets and Basingstoke Bluefins. His first national competition was in 2005.
  • He swims in the S14 class as he has a learning disability
  • His best strokes are breast and back but he really enjoys freestyle and butterfly too
  • He swims for the south east team in the Junior Nationals and short course at Ponds Forge. In the last junior national in March 2009 he swam in 9 events and got 6 silver and 3 bronze medals.
  • He tries to get personal bests at each competition he competes in and aims to get gold at the Junior nationals before he is 18, as well as obtaining a British record
  • In 2008 he was invited for a swimming trial with the Mencap England Team and would like to be able to swim on the England team one day.
James Pout
  • Competing since he was 8, James swims for City of Liverpool Swim Squad and Liverpool Penguins SC
  • James swims in the S8 category. He competes in the Individual Medley, Butterfly, Freestyle and Backstroke.
  • He has Erbs Palsy of the left arm, which means permanent nerve damage, preventing movement of the shoulder and arm

Jonathan Sidaway
  • He has been competing for 3 years. He started when London won the bid for the 2012 Paralympics!
  • Jonathan has Cerebral Palsy and swims in SB8, S9, SM9
  • His best stroke is Breaststroke, but he also swims freestyle and backstroke
  • In the DSE Junior Nationals 2009 he won Silver in 50m and 100m Breaststroke and bronze in 100 backstroke
  • At the Celebral Palsy Sports Nationals 2008 in Nottingham he won Gold in 100m & 50m Breaststroke, 100m & 50m Backstroke and 50M Freestyle. At his school he also came runner up in the sports personality of the year award, missing out by one vote on the top prize

Hazel Simpson
  • Hazel is from Washington and won the Nationwide DSE Regional Sports Person for the North East in 2008
  • She competed in Sydney 2000, where she won gold in the 100m on her Paralympic debut. At Athens in 2004 she took two silvers in both the 100m and 200m. These both were under her maiden name - Hazel Robson
  • The 29 year old from Washington, Tyne and Wear won two bronze medals in the T36 100m and 200m in Beijing this year
Anthony Stephens

Anne Wafula-Strike

Career summary

  • Born in Kenya, Anne is an accomplished athlete who fills the rest of her time as a mother and as a UN Goodwill Ambassador on Disability and Development, including campaigning for the UN Charter on Human Rights for Disabled people.
  • She represented Kenya prior to coming to Great Britain and reached the 400m final in Athens - she moved to London in 2000 to live with her British husband.
  • She gained a B Ed Degree and was once a recording artist back in Kenya, has worked as a model, and one of her sporting heroes is Ronaldhino.
Sobia Watson
  • Sobia is twelve years old and learnt to swim aged four
  • Sobia is a member of Sheffield City Swimming Club and trains five times a week.
  • Sobia has been deaf from birth
  • Sobia's best stroke is front crawl and her best achievements were in the Junior Disability Swimming Championships, where she got two gold medals and two silver medals.

Kate Arnold

Career summary

  • Kate is a former GB swimmer - who represented her country in the World Championships. Moving to athletics she has made a fantastic transition into the sprints and represented GB in her first year of competition at the IWAS Championships in Taipei
  • She has a BTEC diploma in sport. Outside of athletics she enjoys dancing and outdoor pursuits.
Graeme Ballard

Career summary

  • Graeme didn't take up athletics till fairly late, aged 20. He began at Beaumont College in Lancaster where he already competed in swimming and football, but then discovered his talent for sprinting.
  • Graeme was named CP Sport Athlete of the year in 2005.
  • Although a full-time athlete Graeme has achieved his coaching qualification, and loves to coach athletics.
  • He enjoys music, playing the piano. He also enjoys filming and computers.
  • Graeme is a Liverpool supporter and a big fan of Steven Gerrard. He is also a keen on photography and works in childcare.
Simon Barnatt
  • Simon has been swimming with Long Eaton Swimming Club for 3 years.

Michael Bushell

Career summary

  • Mickey has a rare congenital impairment which means the lower part of his spinal cord is missing. He took up racing, when at the age of 11, he was inspired by a school visit from the father of Debbie Brennan - one of Britain's top wheelchair athletes.
  • He is a prolific winner of national championship titles in his event at the annual British Open Championships.
  • Mickey's ultimate ambition is to be the first disabled person to climb Mount Everest and the K2. He is studying for a diploma in Sports Studies.
  • One of his most memorable moments has been racing through the Tyne tunnel at 33mph during the Tyne 2k race.
Jordan Clark
  • Jordan is 16 years old and has been swimming for 2 years, competing within DSE for the past 6 months
  • Jordan has Cerebral Palsy and swims with classifications S8, SB7 & SM8
  • He swims with Deepings Swimming Club, under his coach Lynn Chapman

  • The wheelchair racer shows huge commitment to his sport of athletics. In 2008 he won the London Mini Wheelchair Marathon for the lower age group.
  • He is regularly competes in the DSE National Junior Athletics Championships, held at Blackpool in July, where he impresses officials annually with his talent.
James Clowes
  • He has been taking part in sport competitively for about a year
  • He takes part in 60m club throw, javelin ball throw and shot putt
  • He has athetoid cerebral palsy and his classification is T36 / F36
  • He won 2 gold and 1 bronze in Blackpool in 2008. In 2009’s regional athletics, he won 4 gold medals.

Erin Goldstraw
  • Erin swims with the Scottish team and has been swimming since she was 7 years old
  • She joined her mainstream club- St Thomas ASC, Arbroath- in 2004 and is a competitive member. She is also a member of the Discovery Disabled Swimming Club in Dundee.
  • She is a visually impaired S12 swimmer and is the current short course women’s Scottish record holder for 400m free for that disability.
  • Her favourite event is 400 free but also enjoys other distances as well.
  • In 2008, Erin became 'Junior Citizen of the Year' in her local town of Carnoustie. She was awarded for 'Excellence in Swimming.' She was also presented by Midland District with the 'Scottie Wilson' trophy which is awarded annually for ‘outstanding achievement in aquatics’. Her most prized possession is 'Swimmer of the Year' trophy awarded by her mainstream club - St Thomas - in both 2007 and 2008.
  • Erin really enjoys swimming and looks forward to all events she enters and is happy to go where swimming takes her.
Tobi Green
  • Tobi is from Angmering in Sussex and won the South East Nationwide DSE Regional Sports Person in 2008
  • The student is already part of the South East Regional Talent Squad, which she won a place on in June 2008.
  • She has only been competing for nine months after her teacher and coach spotted her potential.
  • At the regional championships in May 2008, she won gold and cemented her place at the Nationals with a respectable qualifying time.
  • At the DSE Junior Nationals two months later, the 16 year old achieved a personal best and was placed fifth in her event.
Sophie Hancock

Career summary

  • Sophie has always enjoyed participating in sport and was a keen swimmer before she took up the discus and javelin.
  • A full time athlete due to the support she receives from her funding she is hoping for big things in the future. Ultimately Sophie wishes to compete at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games and of course win a medal.
  • Outside of training she enjoys listening to music and socialising, she is from a sporting background, her sister who is also into athletics, specialising in the Marathon and her brother who is on an American Soccer Scholarship.
  • Always up for a challenge she recently took part in a BBC programme 'Beyond Boundaries' where she got to experience many different activities including white water rafting.
Sam Hynd
  • Sam Hynd from Kirkby-in-Ashfield broke three World and five European records at the DSE Short Course Championships in Sheffield, 1st & 2nd November 2008
  • At just seventeen years old, Sam competed at his first Paralympics in Beijing and returned with a gold and a bronze medal in the 400m Freestyle and the 200m Individual Medley.
  • He excelled at the Short Course championships, breaking three of his own records in fine style. He broke the S8 100m

Natalie Jones
  • Natalie now lives in Manchester with her fiance- Paralympic cyclist. She is originally from Colchester.
  • Her coach is Mick Massey and she swims in the S6, SB6 and SM6 class.
  • She won two bronze medals in Beijing Paralympics in the 200m Individual Medley and 50m Freestyle
  • She holds the world record in the 800m Freestyle
Andrew Lindsay
  • Andrew was born in Dunfermline and now lives in Cowdenbeath
  • He swims for Incas Club in the S7, SB6 and SM7 class
  • He has competed in four Paralympic Games, starting in Atlanta 1996, winning a total of two gold and a silver medal over the years.
Daniel Lucker
  • Daniel is from Abergavenny, Wales and trained by former Paralympian Chris Hallam
  • Fifteen year old Daniel won the Nationwide DSE Rising Star Award 2008 and the prize money of £6000.
  • In 2006, Daniel won the Adidas Mini London Wheelchair Marathon for his age group- his first ever competitive race, in a time of just under 19 minutes.
  • In the Bupa Great Manchester Run 2008 he came third position with a new personal best time.
  • In July 2008, Daniel took part in DSE’s National Junior Athletics Championships, winning gold in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m and 3000m- setting national records in the longer distances.
  • In July 2008 Daniel also competed in the Junior World Championships. He returned to Wales as the under 16’s Junior World Champion in the 1500m and 5000m, and as silver medallist in the shorter distances, missing out on gold by only fractions of a second.
  • He competed at the UK School Games in Bath and won gold, beating his closest opposition by over two seconds.
Jack McComish
  • Jack started swimming competitively at 10 years old
  • He swims in the S15 category because he is hearing impaired
  • He likes swimming all strokes but his favourite is breast stroke and least favourite is back stroke
  • He has won many medals in his class as well as relay medals which he particularly enjoys
  • He has qualified for the Scottish nationals age groups in April and regularly swims in district level competitions.
  • Last year he won young disabled sports performer of the year for South Lanarkshire. This year he won an award for junior male sports person for his area.
Craig McNeil
  • Craig has been swimming since he was 2 years old and started lessons when he was 4, taught by his mum!
  • He was born with Talipes and his classifications are S10, SB9, SM10. Craig had several operations when he was young to turn his feet into the position so he could walk.
  • He specialises in backstroke and also enjoys the Individual Medley.
  • His top achievement so far was the gold medal in the 200 IM at the disability junior nationals. He has have many other medals from various meets he attended with his club, including four golds, four silver, six bronze and recently was second overall in the clubs point score for the year 2008
Natasha Oats
  • Natasha was born in 1996 and lives near Rotherham in South Yorkshire
  • She has been swimming for 6 years. She swims as an S14 swimmer
  • She is now coached by Karen Selman who has become the Coach for Dearne Valley SC, making it a disability inclusive club
  • Natasha’s favourite stroke is breast stroke. She has won the bronze medal for the 50 metres breast stroke in the DSE Open Nationals for the past 2 years and the gold medal for the same event in the DSE Juniors (group A) for the past 2 years- adding the gold in the 100m breast stroke this year
  • Natasha also enjoys swimming freestyle (winning silver in the 50 metres freestyle and bronze in the 100 metres freestyle at the Juniors) and 100m Individual Medley
Jack Pegram
  • Jack is 17 years old and plays Para Table Tennis
  • He won the DSE Rising Star Award in 2007
  • Goals for 2009: Nationally - to improve his current GB ranking from 12th, and Internationally - to represent England and Great Britain, retaining his place in the Senior GB squad
  • His dream is to represent his country before a home crowd in the 2012 Paralympics and reach the podium. The highest one.
David Roberts

Megan Short
  • Megan is 11 years old and has right sided hemiplegia (a form of cerebral palsy) which restricts her movement on the right side
  • She began swimming lessons when she was 3 and has been training with Stockport Metro club for 18 months
  • Megan swims all strokes but is particularly good at breaststroke and backstroke
  • Megan has recently taken part in the DSE junior nationals and won two golds, one silver and one bronze medal
  • Megan has been enthused by her recent national success and is hoping one day for a place in the 2012 paralympic team
Eleanor Simmonds
  • Ellie began her disability swimming competition at the DSE championships. Since then she has shot to fame. Ellie became the country's golden girl this year when she won two golds in Beijing- her first Paralympic Games
  • She is originally from Walsall but now studies and lives in Swansea, coached by Billy Pye
  • She swims in the S6, SB6 and SM6 class
  • She won golds in the 100m and 400m Freestyle, though her favourite event is the latter.
  • She holds the world record in the 400m Freestyle which she also broke in Beijing
Lauran Steadman
  • Lauren is from Sawtry in Cambridgeshire
  • She trains at Kelly and Huntingdon Piranhas club and had a passion for swimming from a very early age
  • She first took part in the DSE National junior swimming Championships a few years ago and her competitive activity continued.
  • She won the Nationwide junior swimming award prize in 2008.
  • Lauren has been included on the World Class Podium Level with British Swimming and competed in the Danish Open 2007- where she won seven medals, and won top scholarship at Kelly College in Devon for her swimming and academic ability.
  • In September 2008 she was selected for the Beijing Paralympics, where she swam in the 50m, 100m and 400m freestyle events.
Martin Trundle
  • Martin has been swimming for nearly four years
  • He trains with Radcliffe swimming club five times a week
  • Martin swims as a B4 swimmer as he is visually impaired. He also has learning difficulties and dyspraxia
  • Martins favourite stroke is currently Butterfly
Matt Walker
  • Matt lives in Stockport and competes in the S7, SB7 and SM7 class
  • He won a gold, two silvers and two bronzes in the Beijing Paralympics
  • He has competed in three Paralympic Games- totalling 3 golds, 5 silvers and 3 bronze medals overall
  • His favourite events are 50m Freestyle and Fly
  • He holds the World Record in the 50m Freestyle
Danielle Watts
  • Danielle lives and trains in Oxford
  • She competes in the S1 class and hopes that this country will find more S1 swimmers for her to compete against
  • She has competed in two Paralympic Games- Athens and Beijing
  • She holds numerous world records for her class, including the 100m Freestyle- which is her favourite event
Rochelle 'Shelly' Woods
  • Shelly is one of Britain's outstanding young wheelchair racers. A T54 athlete, she fell 20ft from a tree aged 11, resulting in a spinal cord injury.
  • She first hit the headlines at the 2005 London Marathon when she finished second behind Italy's Francesca Porcellato and beating Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson into third. It was a remarkable performance in Shelly's first marathon.
  • Shelly represented England at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games in March, finishing seventh in the 800m - held at the magnificent MCG arena.
  • She spends much of her time in Australia training with coach Andrew Dawes.
